Reasons to reward yourself
A reward usually comes after some some sort of achievement. Right? At school we are used to
being rewarded for learning our spellings, time tables and for doing well in exams. Do you notice
that the reward stops coming the older we get? Life as an adult has a lot of challenges (lemons)
and you do need to celebrate every little success to keep yourself going. Well I’ve got an idea!
Here’s a list of reasons to reward yourself when no one else will.
• You’ve endured a difficult pregnancy
• You’ve passed your driving test
• You’re doing well on your diet
• You finally did a major household chore that you’ve been putting off
• You made the first move to reconcile a relationship
• You’ve taken on an emotionally challenging situation
• You’ve made a conscious effort to learn something difficult (like a new language)
• You’ve started doing something that you enjoy for your own sanity
• You’ve stepped out of your comfort zone and made a new friend
• You’ve got over a major hurdle (like deciding to drive on the motorway or taking your first flight)
• You have decided to give a child or an animal a second lease on life
• Your child has done well in school
• You’ve managed to make a saving on some of your bills after you’ve got over a major fear
I‘ll share some ideas for rewards and I’m sure you can make up your own list too
• Manicure
• Pedicure
• Face scrub
• Back massage
• Full body massage
• A meal out (not a reward for making a move on the diet)
• A movie night in
• A games night in with friends
• A lie in on the weekend
• A holiday away
• A long slow bath
• A walk
• An extra 29 minutes at the gym
So having looked at both lists, do you agree that we should be rewarding ourselves more often?
And what from my list do you agree with using as rewards? What else would you add? I challenge
you to add five more (no alcohol or other drugs)! Now, can you manage that?
