Adding Special Touches at Christmas – No spend

It’s Christmas!

Well almost!

We will be celebrating our birthday on the 22nd of December and so we will be having a giveaway on our Youtube channel. Check it out and subscribe and you could be in with a chance of winning one of the 12 freebies.

Back to today’s post:

It’s a few weeks before Christmas and most children are still attending ‘real’ school and many adults are still working away from home, although perhaps the majority are working from  home. It is 2020 and a very stressful time because the pandemic is still raging on!

One hallelujah moment happened when a vaccine was approved for use on humans in the UK. So that, at least, offers a glimmer of hope! What else is there to look forward to?

Well, Christmas itself! But in the run up to it, let’s keep our spirits up. And when you think about it, if you need cheering up, well so do many others, in fact so does everyone else.

So how can we do this without spending too much money? Well it is the little special touches that matter. So read on and I will share with you a few ways that you can add some special touches in the run up to Christmas.

Kind Thoughts

You know sometimes you get a gift that you are not happy with but you don’t know how to express it? You wish you could take it back and get the money, or some cheeky ones save the gift to pass it on to someone else, well with kind thoughts, there is not ever that idea of it being unwanted.

Why not write a little note to your kids or partner and place it somewhere for them to find it later in the day at work or at school. Imagine the smile on their face as they read the little note you wrote. I bet you are smiling now just reading about this idea!

Some places to put the little note include, in pockets or in lunch bags or boxes. Imagine the delight when they read something like ‘You are my favourite person and I can’t wait for you to come home this evening. I love you!’

It does not have to be this cheesy or, come to think about it, it can be as cheesy as you like!

Re arranging Furniture

When I was little and growing up in Jamaica, it was my absolute delight to return home from school to notice that my mom had rearranged the furniture in our home! She would not let us know before hand and I would just marvel at the fact that she did all that work, on her own in the time we spent at school. It was a favourite treat of mine. Everything would be polished and shiny and I would get the feeling of having moved to a newer and somehow, bigger house.

Most times this would be done round about Christmas time and even to this day, it is one of my most favourite and treasured Christmas memory. You should try it in your homes.

Special Bakes

Even if you are not adept at baking, you can find a simple recipe that you can wow your family with, in the run up to Christmas. Certain scents wafting through the house just adds allure and warmth. This is somehow magnified especially when done at Christmas time. Our go to is this Easy Cinnamon Roll recipe which is our family favourite.

Most of the ingredients are readily available in most kitchens. Perhaps you will need to purchase yeast if you are not a regular baker. but that is all you will need as an ‘extra’.

When you think of baking at Christmas time, imagine what you conjure up as Christmas scents and then find suitable recipes. Some suggestions in addition to those above would include bread, pies, any pastry product and of course any recipe that requires yeast, oranges, apples and cinnamon.

Breakfast Surprise

Do you have breakfast at breakfast time? I do, but for some reason our kids don’t. (All three are 17 and older and they insist on carrying on most days without eating breakfast. I don’t know how they do it but I certainly relish having breakfast every day. I need the energy to carry out all the jobs I have to do in the day. Once in a while, I get them in the mood for having breakfast and I take pleasure in making it for them.

Especially if you do have the time, this is one special touch that you can add to make especially the weeks winding down to Christmas more bearable.

Our 17 year old says she does not have the time to wait around to eat before she goes off to school, so what I do is to put all the ingredients for a special hot chocolate in a ‘thermos cup’ for her so that she can sip it on the way to school. She loves it and especially the idea that all she has to do is to put the kettle on and add hot water to the mixture.

The special hot chocolate is this:

1 heaped tbsp hot chocolate mix (the instant type)

1 tbsp sugar

4 tbsp milk

1 tsp vanilla essence

a pinch of salt

a pinch of cinnamon

Special Bath or Shower

After a tiring day away from home, most would relish a relaxing shower or bath. If you are able to, one of the simplest and perhaps the nicest things you can do for your loved ones is to prepare them a bath or shower. Add a special touch by using candles, special soaps or shower gels and of course bath bombs.

The aroma left wafting through the bathroom will be sure to uplift the spirits of your loved ones and will make you feel better too. Try it, especially if it is not something that you do regularly and tell me what you think of the idea.

Recently we included our bathroom in our decorating ideas and one of the nicest touches was a poinsettia in the nook. Stunning! And it adds the right Christmas vibe.

Warm PJs

It’s getting more and more chilly each day as we get into Winter. In fact, a few mornings so far, it has been icy. When you are home and getting ready for bed, you want to be as comfy and cozy as possible.

So I imagine that everyone wants to enjoy this feeling. One special touch you could make that I am sure would be appreciated, is to ensure that everyone has warm pjs to put on. Warm them by keeping them on or near to a radiator.

Oh what bliss!

Now it would be absolutely marvelous if there is someone who thought of these ideas and would do them for you too. We live in hope don’t we? Well, perhaps one day it will happen. For now take pride in the fact that you do this amazing low cost things for your family members in the run up to Christmas.

Have a blessed Christmas 2020 and let’s hope that we all have an amazing year ahead, because we all deserve it.
