Highlight is our Word of the Week

This post may contain affiliate links

This week we are choosing to share highlights of how we got on most days. It has been hot and draining but we wont complain as soon we’ll be wishing for this weather again. How typical to complain though, whatever the weather is.

We are pleased to say that the highlight for Sunday was that we got the board and batten that we were planning on doing ticked off the list. Things went mostly smoothly except that the container of NO MORE NAILS was hardened by the time we were ready for it. This is the one we used more than a year ago and we thought that sticking a screw in the opening would preserve it until we were ready for it. Leisa had to make a trip to Wickes and got another container of HARD AS NAILS. I notice that there is no way to use just some and leave the rest for another time. This one cost £12 and although there is a good amount left in it, I think the rest will be wasted. If you do know of a solution, please let us know.

We love how it turned out, although we agree that if the colour at the top and bottom differed, the effect would show better.

Monday’s highlight on the very sunny bank holiday was to visit friends in Buckinghamshire. They’ve just moved here from Jamaica.  We had a friend drive us there and it all went well except that on the way back, we missed our exit for Birmingham and that cost us about an hour extra.

We hope they have a smooth transition to life in the UK and that their son continues to do well and make them proud.

It was interesting reminiscing about what it was like when we came to live here. They have come in the Summer when the heat (which they are used to) is on. I came in the cold of Winter and had a rough start getting used to the weather. I still remember the first time I saw snow and how fascinating it was.

In the evening, we got an impromptu visit from a friend who happened to be in the area. We had a lovely catch-up indoors before going to sit out in the garden amongst the flowers for a bit.

On Tuesday we went back to work and for us both it was like quietly hectic. The best way to describe it is that there were lots to do but it’s hard to settle after a long weekend break. It had to be done though.

Wednesday’s highlight was a little sad. We have a pumpkin arch with several pumpkins on it, and when we went out to water the back garden (behind the shed), we found that it had blown over! We did our best to fix it, but by 3 p.m., it was down again! We haven’t given up, as the two biggest pumpkins are still holding on for dear life. We have to keep them covered with thorn bushes and garden mesh, as the squirrels are also after them.

Pray for us as if these pumpkins do well, it will be our first success at growing pumpkins here in the UK, and we have big plans for them. Nothing at all to do with Halloween BTW. We will be making real food, lol

On Thursday we started our usual ‘decorate for Autumn’ and we filmed it too, for YouTube. You can watch that video when it comes out on Monday. We usually do a weekly highlight video too. If you’re interested in seeing it, just search JOLEISA on Youtube. The two fat faces belong to us, lol. Please do consider subscribing too.

The kitchen shelves also go a makeover and we are pleased to say that we bought nothing new. We used what we already have. It’s something we like to do, changing up areas of the house for different seasons throughout the year. Do you decorate for the seasons?

Today there is a sure sign of Autumn on the way. The mornings aren’t so bright so early, and the days are shorter too. Enjoy the rest of what we have left of nice weather.

We are ofcoure linking up with Anne for the Word of the Week. Wishing you a restful weekend and all the best to those with children going back to school next week.

It was lovely reading about your highlights from the week.
Your dining room looks brilliant and I love that colour. I think products like that, once opened, don’t store very well, so perhaps pass it on to someone else who can make use of it.
I will keep my fingers crossed for your pumpkins.
Autumn is definitely in the air, and it feels lovely and fresh.
Wishing you a lovely weekend x

I always complain about the weather, too hot in the summer and too hot in the winter. There’s about a week in Spring and Autumn when I am happy. lol
Good job with the DIY! It looks fantastic!
How lovely to visit friends even with the detour from missing your exit. Oops.
That is a shame about your pumpkin arch, I hope they make it! x

I hope your friends settle in well to the UK. We moved in the middle of winter from the UK to the middle of summer in South Africa. Our move from South Africa was in summer to the winter months of Dubai. It was the seasons that confused us the most, having Christmas in summer time.
Yes I decorate the fire place and the dining room table according to the seasons.

I hope your friends settle well, the UK weather can be very unsettling for sure. I don’t decorate for the seasons apart from Christmas of course. I hope your pumpkins will be ok. My daughter picked what she thought was a melon from a farm in late August (we were told we could take whatever we wanted.) I said it felt too heavy to be a melon so we put it in the kitchen window. By late October it was bright orange and of course, a pumpkin. It was incredibly tasty too. So fingers crossed.

Love the colour of your board and batten. I’ve never used No More Nails so can’t offer any advice, sorry. Lovely to visit your friends – oops to ending up with a longer journey home though! What a shame about your pumpkin arch. Hope your two biggest pumpkins managed to hang in there. Lovely to decorate for different times of the year. #WotW
