How to Budget for Moving Overseas

This post may contain affiliate links

Moving overseas can be an exciting adventure, but there are lots to prepare. An international move can be expensive, and so you must create a budget. To help you navigate the process, focus on these five areas.

Consider your shipping costs

To start with you’ll need to budget for your shipping costs. Consider the type of transportation you’d like to use, whether air freight or sea. Estimate how much you’ll need to bring. When you’re looking for a shipping company, it’s best to compare a few different providers. Take a good look at the reviews and testimonials, and compare the prices. If you have a rough idea of how many items you have, and how much everything will weigh, you should be able to get an estimate.

Next, you’ll need to budget for your packing expenses. Migrating overseas is a big move, and so you’ll need to ensure that you have sturdy packaging materials. The majority of shipping services provide packaging services too. Choosing a service that includes packaging will make life a whole lot easier. Ask your shipping company for a packaging quote, and work this into your budget accordingly. Here are a few other questions you may want to ask your shipping company:

  • Is insurance included in the service?
  • Which precautions are taken to protect fragile items?
  • Do you also provide unpacking services?

Insurance

If your shipping company does not offer insurance coverage, you’ll need to purchase insurance separately. If your provider does offer insurance, you’ll want to check the coverage. Some moving companies only offer basic coverage, so you might want to shop around for a better insurance offer.

Visa costs

Depending on where you’re moving to you may need to budget for visa costs. You should start the application process as soon as you can. Once you’ve been in the country for a few years you may be able to apply for permanent residency. If you’re moving to the UK you might be wondering what is indefinite leave to remain? Essentially, it’s a type of immigration status, you’ll need to have been in the UK for at least five years to apply. When you’re moving overseas you’ll also need to budget for an immigration lawyer.

Try using a finance app

Budgeting can be tricky with just a pen and paper, to help you create a more accurate budget, you may wish to try a budgeting app. These apps can help you to separate your spending into categories, reduce your expenses, and create goals. You can set yourself a goal to save up for moving costs. From here, you can separate your spending expenses into various categories. There are lots of budgeting apps that you can choose from. Check out YNAB, Clarity Money, or Mint. Using apps like these you’ll save money and boost your financial health.

When you’re preparing to move it’s best to start getting ready well in advance. You’ll have lots to do, from packing to cleaning and arranging your transport. Ensure that you plan and execute it wisely so that you will make a success of the whole process.
