Word of the Week is Mish Mash

This week wasn’t a confused mess; it was more of a hodgepodge of little things. Some weeks are like that, where nothing really significant happens (none that we want to report anyway). So this week the days just rolled on by and we got on with what we had to, and included some things or activities that we wanted to.

Sunday afternoon, we decided that we hadn’t been out together in a long time, so we made a little visit to TK Max and Home Bargains (or was it B & M?). We weren’t looking for anything in particular except marble-look contact paper for a cousin and also a pink Stanley cup (not the really expensive one, of course. The two rolls of contact vinyl came to about £15, and the cup for a younger cousin was £10. We all came back home having feasted our eyes for a bit. It was raining heavily and on the way back we stopped and got apple pies and McFlurries from the big yellow M.

After the rain eased, we went outside and reaped our two ‘big’ pumpkins with whatever else was ready, like tomatoes and cucumbers. The flower beds and pots still look amazing and it’s strange to think that in a few weeks we wont even want to go out back due to how cold and ‘ugly’ it will be.

We won’t cut them open for another week or two and we hope by then they’ll be ready to be added to some rich soup. We could have waited a little longer to reap them, but with it getting so wet and cold, we didn’t want to risk it.

It’s been a mish-mash kind of food on the menu this week too. We have lots of stuff in the fridge and freezer to use up. One day I had a delicious egg and chicken fried rice with lots of extra veggies added in. The chicken had been seasoned and skewered, ready for the BBQ, but I doubt we will be having any more BBQ until next year. The fried rice was beautiful.

Another day, I was planning to do a stir-fry with lots of veggies from the fridge and freezer. I eventually added salted cod, noodles and enough water to make some sort of chunky soup. That too, was different but good, really tasty.

I know it might not look appetizing but it was nourishing and filling with asparagus, red cabbage, red onions, garlic, peppers and zucchini.

The weather was also giving me a mish-mash vibe because Thursday was quite warm for us here in the Midlands. I was pleasantly surprised when I went outside to take in the bin. It has mostly been cold and wet though. I made a brisk walk up to Aldi to get a few fruits and that was a pleasant walk too. I was sweating when I returned home.

Sharing one more of my mish mask meals this week… for some reason my photo won’t upload, but I made a wrap out of a handful of soaked lentils blended with an egg and some salt. Then it was filled with sardines in tomato sauce, lettuce, and pak choi from the conservatory, as well as some chopped red onions. It was so filling, I was actually surprised.

Edited to add: I finally got the photo uploaded.

My thoughts this week have also included a mishmash of questions I wish were easy to answer: Should I go back home? Does it make sense to take my pension now? Do I sell my investment property now or hold on a bit longer? So many thoughts and I hope I’m not alone.

Hoping you have all had a fantastic week. Even though mine was a mish-mash, I still count it as a massive blessing. Sharing with Anne, who blogs at Raisie Bay, is one of the things I look forward to each week.

Some weeks do just seem like a mish-mash of lots of different things. I find it hard on weeks like that to choose a word for the week.
Your meals this week sound delicious. It’s lovely to be able to incorporate home-grown things into your cooking.
It sounds like you have some big decisions to make. I wish you all the best with that.
    Have a lovely weekend.

I love a week like that with a mish mash of things.
Well done with your haul from the garden, especially those pumpkins and all your food sounds delicious!
This weather is strange. It’s wet and grey here but still quite warm.
I hope you get some answers to your questions. Good luck.

It’s been a proper mish mash of weather hasn’t it! Your food looks delicious, I have been trying harder to make sure I use up the things I buy. Big questions to think about, must be the time of year 🙂

My weeks are usually a mash up of many different things. We’ve been away so our fridge and cupboards were bare so meal planning can start and we shouldn’t have any left overs for a while. We’ve had a lot to harvest also, quite a few things were being nibbled at. #wotw

The great thing about pumpkins is that you can harvest them early. We harvested a big green one once (my daughter had thought it a watermelon) I could tell it was a pumpkin so we put it on the table in the kitchen window and by October we had a gorgeous orange pumpkin. The weather has been a complete mish mash hasn’t it. I’ve sat here in the morning with my cardi on and by the afternoon, the patio doors have been left wide open. You do seem to have a lot on your mind at the moment, I hope you find the guidance and answers you need soon. Thanks for joining in, I enjoy catching up with you.

Mish-mash sounds like a very good word to describe your week. Good to be using up stuff in the fridge and freezer – the photos of your meals are making me feel hungry – they do look good! Good luck with working through the mish-mash of questions too. #WotW
