Getting Your Garden Ready for Summer With Kids

Are you interested in improving your home for your kids? If so, then you should absolutely focus on making some changes to the garden space. There are lots of options worth thinking about here that will help guarantee that your garden is a dream come true. So, let’s explore some of the best possibilities.

Digging Zone

First, you should make sure that you are thinking about adding a digging zone to your garden. Kids are like dogs – they love nothing better than to dig a massive hole. They do this at the beach and – if you let them – they’ll do this in your yard too. They might take this step even if you don’t let them so it’s well worth setting a space where they can enjoy this activity. To do that you need to break up the dirt so it’s easy to dig. You might also want to think about using a water system too if you are prone to issues with dry weather where you live.

Kid Friendly Edible Area

Next, you could also think about creating a space in your garden with plenty of edibles that your kids can enjoy. This might sound odd, but there are lots of plants that are safe to eat and putting things like this in their mouth is how children – particularly small children – tend to explore the world. So, how can you make sure that your space has lots of edible options? Well, the best way is to do your research on a typical gardening blog. This will reveal some of the best possibilities that are absolutely worth considering.

Sensory Path

Another option worth thinking about is a sensory path. This is particularly useful for your children if they have a sensory condition like autism. If so, then a sensory path in your yard can be a tool or element that they can use to calm themselves down and relax their mind. When it comes to how to create a sensory path, you can think about adding plants and shrubs that are safe and fun to touch. You can also go further than than this and think about adding different lighting elements too including motion sensory lights. This will make the space fun to explore, even late into the evening!

Mud Kitchen

You might also want to think about adding a mud kitchen to your garden too. This is another safe space that is going to be perfect for kids who want to explore messy play. To create a mud kitchen, you could just think about building a basic work bench and then once again giving them a water source. That’s why the best space for this could be right next to the the garden tap.

Soften The Landing

You might also want to think about how to make your garden safer for the kids. There are obviously a wide range of options that you can explore that will help you do this. For instance, you could think about changing the ground. If you have typical patio or basic grass then it can give your kids quite a bumpy landing and this is the last thing that you want. The easiest way around this is astro turf. It has a natural bounciness which means that you can easily avoid some of the common bumps and bruises that tend to be a problem with harder ground in the garden. That’s definitely worth considering if your kids are known for accidents or have no real understanding of personal safety.

Accessories And Activities

You should absolutely make sure that you are looking at the different activities and accessories that you can add to your garden space. There are classic choices here like trampolines. If you have enough space a trampoline is a great way to keep the kids active and energised throughout the summer season. If you don’t have enough space, then you might want to think about something smaller like a set of goals. Even a small space will provide hours of entertainment for kids who are able to kick the balls.

Remove The Thorns

Next, you should make sure that you are removing thorns and other spiky elements from your garden. Different thorny bushes are a massive problem and they are the common causes of cuts and bruises. The good news is that it’s easy to replace choices like this with child-friendly alternatives and it means that you don’t have to worry about them constantly running in with injuries.

Clean It Up

If your home has seen better days then it could be a matter of just cleaning it up to make sure that it’s ready for your kids. When it comes to cleaning up the garden start with the grass. If you’re not the type of person that likes getting soil underneath their fingernails then we recommend that you look at the best electric lawn mowers. This will make it far easier to maintain your garden with minimum levels of effort.

Create Shade

Last but certainly not least, you should make sure that you are providing your garden with the right amount of shade. Again, this is particularly important if you have younger children. Younger children need shade to avoid damage from the sun and health issues including heatstroke. You can handle this naturally by planting different shrubs and trees. Or, alternatively you can think about adding an artificial shade for your garden. These come in all shapes and sizes so you will always be able to find the perfect option for your space.

We hope this helps you understand some of the key steps that you should take to get your garden ready for a great summer with your kids. When it comes to the different possibilities, make sure that you are thinking about different elements like your budget as well as what you want to achieve. Do you want it to be as fun as possible or do you just want to make subtle changes to the existing design. Once you have a plan in place, you can then get to work.
