The Best Word to sum up This Week is Bust

This post may contain affiliate links

This week if you’re living in Birmingham in the United Kingdom, you must have heard that our city has found itself in a black hole financially. Yes, we are going bust. I think the latest I heard is that the government is going to send in people to take over the day-to-day runnings to help us get out of the mess. I think we’ll be in a much bigger mess as those people are going to charge a lot to do that job.

In my mind, it’s always the people at the bottom (of the so-called social ladder) who will suffer the most. They have promised that social care will not be affected. I am not so sure about that. What I think they can guarantee is that there will be job cuts and tax increases. Talking about job cuts, I saw some jobs advertised and one of them I was particularly interested in. But just to give myself more options, I decided to apply for two of them. Soon after we returned from Florida at the end of August, I got an email to say that I wasn’t being shortlisted (for the one that I really didn’t want). So I held out hope that I would hear good news about the one I wanted. Well, as it turns out, I’ve heard nothing, and I don’t expect to, either. I don’t think they have any money to pay new staff now. So there goes my dream of getting a job with Birmingham City Council.

Getting closer to home, we are busy with our young people and getting them set for life, hopefully. My son has now got his very first apartment and I have been busy helping him to get it furnished and set up so he can be comfortable. So as of now, I can also report that I am bust! Thankfully I do have an Argos card which allows me to take out items on hire purchase and I’ve selected the option to pay it off interest-free over 1 year. That way, we can spread out the repayment in a more manageable way.

I am excited for him and his place looks so comfy and cosy. I got a lot of products and decor pieces on Amazon and some from Temu. I predict that Temu will go bust soon. The site is so misleading with the images they show versus what you get when the products arrive. I will never ever order from Temu again and I’ve heard quite a few people saying that. I bought a basic shower curtain and when it arrived, the width was the size of the door and it only had 6 rings! Of course, I thought I must be dreaming! As for the food canisters I ordered, on the website, they look clear and lovely but what I got looked cloudy and like really cheap plastic. Returns are free but you have to take photos of each item etc. and upload them to their website. I found it such a bother so I will just cut my losses and leave them to go bust.

Leisa’s daughter graduated from University too and it was such a lovely ceremony and a fab day out. We hope she does well with her Law Degree and at least help people avoid going bust.

Overall we have had a lovely week trying to decorate for Fall/Autumn and making our place as cosy as we can to get away from the sadness that overtakes us in the dark days.

This week too, I have started looking around for which bank has a good deal going so I can switch my current account to them. It’s something I do every September now. TSB seems to have the best offer going at the moment with an offer of £150 to switch your current account to them. Hopefully, on Monday of next week, I will contact them to start the switch.

We hope you are having a good time where you are and managing to deal with whatever life throws your way.

BTW, Update: I have been shortlisted for the position I wanted. But unfortunately, I’m going to decline. It just doesn’t feel right and I’m no longer interested.

I have heard on the news about Birmingham going bust. What a mess. You are right it is always those at the bottom who suffer the most. That’s a shame about the jobs that you applied for especially since you were shortlisted. You have to go with your gut instinct though.
That is great news about your son, he sounds really settled and congrats to Leisa’s daughter for graduating from Uni.
I have heard bad things about Temu, I wouldn’t trust them with my bank details. x

I did hear about Birmingham and I have no idea what they will do to sort it out. I think a council near us is possibly going busy too. There is some good news for your children this week. We have an Argos account and it has come in very handy at times. I hope you find a job that feels better #WotW

Oh thanks. I fell like I am too settled in my ways and love to do things in my own time and on my own terms. I honestly don’t want to be tied down in a job working for others any time soon.

It was a bit of a shock to hear about Birmingham going bust, I remember not so long ago that there was a lot of money left over from the common wealth games. I wonder what happened to that? Congrats to both of your children, it sounds like they are doing really well. Nice to see you joining in with #wotw again x

Sounds like its going to be a tricky time for people in Birmingham with the financial issues with the Council – I’m inclined to agree that it is often the people at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum who will suffer the most, but I hope that won’t be the case. Hope your son is settling well into his first apartment. Well done to Leisa’s daughter on graduating from university. Well done for being shortlisted for the position you wanted even if you have decided to decline it. #WotW
