Making changes to one’s diet is never an easy thing. I know. From my own experience. It is very hard. Our taste buds and eating habits would have us believe that nothing else is good for us.
I’ve experimented with different diets (some of which I’ve made up myself) with different levels of success (or failure).
One of the diets we are told is good for us is the vegan diet. Have you ever tried it?
Let’s examine some of the more unusual reasons to go for a vegan diet
Help with back pain
A lot of back pain actually originates from the kidneys. I’m no medical professional but I am lead to believe that a diet rich in meat and other animal products can put the kidneys into overdrive.
This eventually leads to back pain when the kidneys can’t work fast enough to flush out the toxins.
If this is true, it makes sense then, to give meat a break, and try more plant sources of protein.
Lowers your risk of certain cancers
Can I just say, I’ve always heard this one?
At first, I believed but I must say it seems like one out of every two people ends up with cancer. Not so sure about this as a result. I am especially feeling torn about this as I know a couple of vegetarians who were recently diagnosed with cancer.
And also, I am thinking that a lot of persons live well into their 80’s and 90’s, having eaten meat all their lives. Many have also not been diagnosed with cancer.
It does relieve constipation
My reasoning is that if you cut down on meat, you should increase the number of vegetables that you eat. Veggies are known to be rich in lots of nutrients, including fibre.
Fibre is essential for a healthy gut and general digestive health.
I always feel ‘freer’ to get a number two out when I’ve been eating a lot of fruits and veggies.
You get to experience a range of other foods that you would not normally eat
When was the last time you tried an unfamiliar food?
This is one of my favourite things to do, even while away on holiday.
So go ahead, take your tastebuds on a ride and explore some unusual culinary delights. Who knows, you may be introduced to some new foods which you will absolutely love and which will enrich your diet and leave you wanting to try even more.
Did you know, for example, that there is something called a vegetarian haggis? I’ve never tried it, but now I can’t wait.
I’ve checked out the list of best veggies and, to be honest, some of them a very ugly. Thank goodness, they taste better than they look, and they are mega good for you too. Anything uglier than ginger?
Set up your kids for life
Kids learn so much by our example. Believe it or not, they are not born wanting sweets. They naturally gravitate towards what we give them.
Think about it. Their diet is a reflection of how you have trained their palet.
Do you have anything to add to my list of reasons to go vegan? If so, just pop it in the comment box below and let’s carry on with the conversation. One thing I would say though is that nothing, not even healthy eating should be forced on anyone. So with that in mind, we may encourage others to do what we think is good, but then the choice is theirs. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink.
Have a happy, healthy life whether you choose to be vegan or not.
