Four of the Best Ways to Gain Work Experience

This post may contain affiliate links

The global job market is competitive, making it essential to have relevant work experience. It is often the key to unlocking doors to your dream career, no matter the field or sector. According to research, employers value hands-on experience because it tends to showcase your skills while demonstrating your commitment to a cause. Therefore, whether you are a recent graduate or interested in switching careers, it will be in your interest to gain relevant work experience through freelancing, internships, or other avenues, such as apprenticeships. This article discusses these avenues in further detail and how you can leverage them to gain work experience.

  • Internships

Working as an intern gives you the kind of experience needed to make strides in a competitive job market. It is often an invaluable bridge between academic knowledge and the practical application of theories learned in the formal education system. Although internships are short-term work opportunities, they allow you to immerse yourself in a professional environment and learn directly from experienced mentors in your desired field. They help you gain firsthand experience in your chosen field without the need to clamour for professionals to teach you the ins and outs of your career. These opportunities help you finetune your skills while making meaningful connections you can leverage for future purposes. The doors to future employment often rely on quality internships that give you ample exposure to do better in your field. Therefore, it is important to seek internships that align with your career goals and expose you to industry-specific tasks and real-world challenges. Fortunately, many companies offer internship programmes all year round, so it’s just a matter of searching for the right one. You can explore platforms like LinkedIn and intern-specific job boards to find excellent opportunities that align with your career interests and goals.

  • Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships offer a unique blend of on-the-job training and formal education. You have the opportunity to earn a decent wage while gaining hands-on experience relevant to your career. Many industries across different sectors offer apprenticeship programmes. Therefore, you will find industries like manufacturing, construction, health, banking, and so on reserving an annual slot for apprentice intake. It is even better knowing that the availability of apprenticeship grants helps alleviate the financial burdens individuals may encounter. Unlike volunteering and internships that may not offer regular remuneration during the period of on-the-job training, apprenticeships make provision for that, which makes it all the better if you are financially strained. Some government agencies and private institutions offer these grants to make the practice an ongoing project. You will be surprised to know that many employers offer apprenticeship programmes that become a talent pool for future recruitment. Therefore, when you get into an apprenticeship programme, you have a bigger opportunity to stay on as a permanent employee at your dream organisation.

  • Volunteering

As of December last year, about 12 million people had already taken at least one volunteering activity. Although the numbers recorded were lower than in 2021 and 2022, it is still good news that many people are interested in using volunteering activities to gain work experience. The best way to do this is to choose volunteer activities that align with your career interests and goals. Labour experts say volunteerism is particularly beneficial for persons with limited experience who want to enter a specific field. Upon careful observation, you will realise that volunteering demonstrates initiative and a willingness to gain work experience without financial expectations. Although the latter is necessary, it is better to use these activities to gain more knowledge before making the big jump. When you volunteer, you have a platform to network with professionals with similar passions. The advantage here is that this can lead to mentorship or job referrals you have been eyeing for a long while. Therefore, whether your volunteering role is to manage social media accounts or plan an event, taking it seriously will be to your advantage. You have an opportunity to understand the nuances of the role or field while enhancing your skill set for the next move.

  • Freelancing

Studies show that you can work on short-term projects for different clients as part of freelancing activities to gain work experience. It is an excellent way to build an enviable portfolio and diversify your skills for the next major career move. Platforms like Fiverr and Upwork are authentic organisations that help connect freelancers with businesses seeking their services. All you have to do is to find a freelancing job that aligns with your passions and interests. It is worth noting that this approach is excellent for programmers, executive assistants, writers, and designers who can work on different contracts simultaneously. Aside from developing practical skills, freelancing allows you to showcase your skillset to potential employers who may want to take you on full-time or offer a permanent role with all the perks of a lucrative appointment.

Work experience is relevant, so make good use of opportunities like internships, apprenticeships, freelancing, and volunteering to gain a foot into your desired job market.
