Four Workplace Safety Tips you Must Know and Abide by

This post may contain affiliate links

Even with the advancement of modern times, it’s not uncommon to hear or witness an unexpected accident or casualty in the workplace, altering individuals’ or working teams’ lives. Regardless of the safety measures and protocols in place, what good will they be if your employees don’t know them or are unprepared to follow them? In 2020, the UK recorded 111 worker fatalities, a figure lower than the previous years’ although attributable to the COVID-19 outbreak. Despite this, health and safety in the workplace is essential, so it’s well worth considering these tips for creating a much safer working environment

Sometimes, setting up relevant health and safety and legal posters around the workplace in strategic positions is a good idea. You might ask, why do I need an HSE legal poster? Well, it is always a good idea to have something that you can easily refer yourself and others to.

Here are some of the more common tips that you should know and abide by:

  • Be mindful in the workplace

Being mindful of the hazards or risks linked with specific jobs or present in the workplace is essential to guard yourself against them. When you become familiar with the surroundings, it’s much easier to comply with precautions and forestall unnecessary, dangerous situations. While accidents may occur in many places in the workplace, some high-risk areas include storehouses, areas close to the kitchen, hardware, and washroom, among others. Safety professionals have proposed the idea of workplace mindfulness by exploring what it seems like to carry on with work mindlessly.

Workers who behave mindlessly are perceived to be on “auto-pilot” and more likely to take part in risky conduct at work after performing a routine task over extended periods.

  • Be prepared is an essential workplace safety tip

It’s practical to get acquainted with every emergency exit in the workplace, particularly those nearest to your assigned floors and other doorways in the entire building. It’s vital to note the various signs marked in different areas to guide and warn you of potential dangers and risks. Be sure of what action to take in an emergency, such as power outages, fires, storms, or physical assault. Likewise, keep adequate backup procedures to rescue your data during electrical or computer failures.

  • Train your employees about safety

Regular employee training on safety is essential to stop or minimize the risk of accidents in the workplace. While there are several training programs to cover almost every industry, you may need to engage your workers in areas critical to your business operations. From workplace ergonomics to environmental safety, fire and equipment safety, engaging your employees in training programs is crucial to communicating your commitment towards their wellbeing, which can be an excellent tool for their motivation. For example, manufacturing, construction, and other high-risk jobs must ensure their staff are well trained and equipped to work safely at heights.

  • Report unsafe working environment

The best way to prevent hazardous conditions from occurring is to report them to superiors when you notice them. Failure to do so becomes part of the problem instead of the solution. Your superior is lawfully obligated to ensure workers have a safe working environment, yet they must know about these conditions to do so. It’s critical to consistently report any risky or dangerous situations as early as possible to halt the likelihood of an accident to protect yourself and your teams. You can likewise work together with other staff to discover solutions to keep accidents and injuries from happening, over and over again.

Most workplace injuries and accidents result from a lack of knowledge and understanding of safety measures. With prevention more preferred to cure, you may want to consider the tips mentioned above to protect your workers and save your business hundreds if not thousands of cash.

I think all employees will forget about 3/4 of all what they studied on the next day. So it’s so important to re-train them after some time. How often I need to do it?

I think quarterly is doable. But the organization also needs to be responsive to when things happen and a refresher is needed.
