Frugal Things We’ve Done This Week April 30

Keeping a check on frugal things we’ve done does keep us mindful of not overspending. It truly is satisfying to note all the ways you can save money and stick to your budget. Some weeks we must admit that we don’t make as many savings as we’d like to, but, as Tesco says. ‘Every little helps’. Here are some of the ways we saved money this week.

Our list of frugal things we've done continues to grow. See some of the money saving tips and bargain grabbing ideas that are so simple yet so effective. Every little helps and you too can join the frugal living journey and save up for bigger expenses.

Keep those receipts

We’ve discovered that there are quite a few apps that you can download so that you get some cash back or entries into prize draws etc from your store receipts. I knew about Receipt Hog when I was in Florida in October. I started using it but stopped when I returned to England. I only now just realise that it can be used here too. All you really do is to spend as normal for all your shopping and then take a picture of your receipt and upload it. So I have started again and I would definitely say it is worth a try.

On the point of keeping your receipts, this week I was clearing away some shopping bags and carrier bags and noticed that I had quite a lot of receipts in them. Anyway, I also noticed that quite a few of them, on the back, ask for your participation in a short online survey where you give your experience on your shopping trip. It is quite easy to do, so I did a few on my phone and am now entered into several prize draws. On one of them, I won a free movie download and DVD! All good, and worth a try.

H and M

This week we had the opportunity to travel to good old Bradford to the Broadway shopping centre. It’s quite modern and has nice features including a lovely food court with the usual range of eateries with a few others dotted in. our biggest saving came from our shopping in H and M. The teller asked us if we wanted to get a 10 percent discount on our shopping. We were in a rush but didn’t want to lose out on a discount. By simply downloading the H and M app, we were able to get a 10% discount on the entire shop which meant that we got one item absolutely free. We also got a free scratch card for a chance to win £250 to spend in H and M. Unfortunately that money eluded us. Can you imagine how pleased we would be with such a win?

Free flower seeds

You might remember that we got some free flower seeds some time ago. Well, with the recent rainy weather we’ve been having, and with the promise of a sunshiny weekend, we thought it best to spread the frugal living love and give some of the seeds away to a neighbour as well as sprinkle ours in the patch prepared with our very own compost from the bin!

Aldi’s Super Six

My favourite supermarket is Aldi. If you check it out, it will become yours too. I’m excited each week I go in, to see which items will be on the ‘super six’ list. These are good quality food items on a reduced price. This week I was pleased to get coconuts (suitable for a host of Jamaican recipes including rice and peas) and pineapples for a sweet and sour chicken dish. Some will also feature in the warmer weather we are expecting this weekend.

Train journeys and refreshments

We knew we would be spending at least 6 hours travelling to and from Bradford. In an effort not to overspend, we made sure to purchase food and drink to take with us, rather than buying them at these expensive shops at the train station. I know the shop owners have got to pay their exorbitant rent, but ain’t none of that money coming from me. It was well worth it as we could have exactly what we wanted, most of which was sold at the stations or on the train for up to three times the price in some cases.
