10 top tips for spring cleaning your house
Spring cleaning is a daunting thing, no matter how you approach it, but there are plenty of ways to get get the job done faster and with less stress. Above all, you want to get through your home as quickly and thoroughly as possible so you can enjoy that feeling of relaxing in a spotless home sooner. Just imagine the joy you feel when your house is lighter and you have several items that you can sell to put towards your next holiday or so.
With these 10 top tips for spring cleaning, you’ll get that ultimate sense of satisfaction faster than ever.
1: Get your cleaning gear
Start by making a list of everything you’ll need throughout your spring clean. You don’t want to be nipping to the shop because you run out of furniture polish halfway through cleaning the dining room table. Create a list of everything you need, stock up and then send one of your helpful family members out to get anything you happen to forget (there’s always something!).
#2: De-clutter your rooms
Before you actually start cleaning, you’ll want to declutter. There’s nothing worse than stuff getting in your way when you’re trying to clean and slowing you down. Start by throwing out everything you don’t want or need and then dedicate a space in your home that you can keep everything you want to keep. Try not to move things around unnecessarily; get them out of the way before you start cleaning and get them back in their correct place afterwards.
#3: Do one room at a time
While it might be tempting to do all your dusting at one time and then move on to the next task, you’re actually making things more difficult for yourself. You’re better off working on one room at a time and finishing it completely before starting on the next one. You’ll exert yourself less by working in one room and be more efficient this way.
You’ll also feel more motivating by finishing tasks more regularly in each room rather than going through the arduous task of covering the whole house with each job. Chances are you’ll clean more thoroughly as well because you’re not doing the same repetitive task for too long at any one time.
#4: Start with the kitchen and living room
The other key reason for working on one room at a time is because you won’t be able to fully clean your entire home in one day. What you can do, though, is aim to get the kitchen and living room finished on day one – the place where family meals are cooked and you want to relax at the end of a hard day’s clean.
The bathroom can wait for another day but you can enjoy the sense of achievement in enjoying a spotless living room and indulge in a cheeky takeaway so the kitchen isn’t messed up as soon as you’ve finished cleaning it.
#5: Get your furry friends out of the house for the day
Pets running around the house not only make it harder to clean, they’re also experts at making a mess when you need it least. Not to mention the fact hoovers blitzing around are a dog’s nightmare and cleaning chemicals can be hazardous to animals’ health.
If you can, try to get your furry friends out of the house for the day. Maybe a trusty family member can look after them for the day or one of you can take them to the beach, a forest or somewhere for a fun day out so you can focus on cleaning the house, knowing they’re well looked after.
As you might be using the services of pest control experts like those found here: it might be safer to get the pets out for the day, just to be on the safe side.
Goldfish can probably stay for the day.
#6: Steam clean your carpets
Aside from being the best way to kill germs and get rid of tricky stains, steam cleaning your carpets also helps remove dents left by furniture and other heavy items. Hoover your carpets first with a regular vacuum cleaner (not a steam vacuum) to remove the top layer of dirt before you apply any steam. Your steam cleaner will always work more effectively after your carpet is freshly vacuumed.
Start in the corner of each room that’s furthest away from the door and work in clean, straight lines. Once you’re finished, allow your carpets to dry completely before you bring your furniture back in or allow people to walk on the carpet again.
#7: Got a dishwasher? Use it
While dishwashers aren’t always the most efficient use of water or energy, they’re miracle workers when it comes to speed and they’re not only good for dishes. You can clean toys, containers, plastic picture frames and all kinds of household items in your dishwasher. This can save you crazy amounts of time when you’re trying to get your entire home cleaned as quickly and thoroughly as possible.
#8: make sure you get all the germ magnets in your home
While we tend to think of floors and toilet seats as the dirtiest parts of our homes, there are far worse germ magnets in the home that are often overlooked. If these germs are overlooked, this can often lead to pests forming in the home. If this is to occur, make sure to visit a website like https://www.pestcontrolexperts.com/exterminator/oklahoma/ to get the problem sorted ASAP. See below for a list of the places most likely to have germs:
- The sink
- The bins
- Cutting boards
- Baby chairs
- Light switches and doorknobs
- Computer keyboards
- Phones and tablets
- Remote controls
- Refrigerator coils
- Bedding
- Shoes
There’s not much point steam cleaning all your carpets if you’re going to walk all over them in shoes carrying all kinds of germs from the streets outside. While anything people regularly touch with their hands is always going to attract a nasty cocktail of germs, including the phones, laptops, light switches and remote controls you’re touching on a daily basis.
#9: Do the outside of your house on a dry, overcast day
While it might seem obvious to try and enjoy cleaning the outside of your house on a nice sunny day, this will make your job a lot harder. Direct sunlight will dry your cleansers before you can wipe them off and leave smears on your windows and other surfaces. Of course, you can’t control the weather, so if you’re in the midst of a spring drought, start early on the shaded side of your house in the morning and then move over to the other side once the sun has passed over.
#10: Protect yourself from chemicals
While a good spring clean is a healthy part of keeping your home in order, you’re going to be using a lot of harsh chemicals while you’re at it. Make sure you properly ventilate rooms by leaving windows and doors open. Make sure you know what you’re using to clean and what chemicals are in them – some products will require you to wear gloves and you might want to use a breathing mask and goggles for some cleaning products.
A clean home is great but make sure you look at yours and your family’s health in the process.
So there you have it, our 10 top tips for spring cleaning faster and more effectively. A little bit of planning ahead and strategic thinking goes a long way and makes looking after your home much less daunting.

I like doing decluttering once a month but I enjoy more my yearly, major decluttering. I do it before the new years come and at the same time, I also create a plan on how to update my house interior. I want a new vibe every year, that fits the coming years’ theme. Jolie, do you have any suggestions on update house interior on a budget, especially on furnitures and closets? Thank you in advance.

Great question! A great idea is to look out in charity shops or Amazon Marketplace for items that you can use in your decor. You could also sell your own pieces that you no longer need and then use the money made to fund your projects. Also, how about some DIY like painting your own furniture, reupholstering, and adding your own flair? Plants are also always a good bet to get that lovely homely look and feel. Thanks so much for stopping by Nadya.
