Awesome Ways to Save in New York City

This post may contain affiliate links

We love visiting New York City and wish we could do it more often. See pics from my last visit below.

New York City might not be the least expensive city to visit, but there’s no need for it to be the most expensive, either. There are definitely expensive parts of the city, especially if you stick to the areas that are most popular with tourists. However, if you know how to, you can save a lot of money and travel the city for a lot less.

Save in New York City on Travel

NYC is a big city, and getting around can sometimes be tricky. Using car-share services and taxis might make things more simple, but they can also get expensive. If you want to spend less, get familiar with the subway, and start traveling like a local. For shorter distances, New York is also a surprisingly walkable city.

Go to the Right Locations to save in New York City

You might be drawn to the flashy lights of Times Square when you visit the city, but the closer to Midtown you are, the more expensive everything will be. For somewhere cheaper to stay, try looking for a place in Brooklyn or Queens. The West Village, NoHo, or Tribeca are excellent options if you want to save on great food and drink.

Go on a ferry ride

This is one of my favourite things to do when I visit New York. There’s always a ferry ready to leave for a two-hour cruise where you can see the lights and views of the city. The statue of liberty is a sight to behold from the harbour!

The last time I got on the ferry there, we went to an all-white cruise as part of a charity event. The fare was reasonable (cheaper if it’s not for charity) and we had a blast with a free concert on board, games, food, and lots of laughter.

I even managed to see some friends I had known in Jamaica and whom I had not seen in over 15 years! How cool that we met up again on the same cruise!

Go see the taping of one of the popular talk shows

Did you know that it’s actually free to be in the audience for the recording of most talk shows? Yes, it is.

So this time my friends and I were meeting up for the first time in years, so I applied online for free tickets for us to see The View! My friends and I dressed alike and got a special ‘shout out’ during the show too.

Not only that, but one of the guests was promoting his new book so we all had a free copy too.

It was interesting to see this in action and we got to pose for some memorable photos too. All we needed after that was a bite to eat and a walk around Times Square.
