Meal Planning This Week Ending August 31 Featuring Foods from the Allotment

This post may contain affiliate links

As we approach the beginning of September, I can’t help but be grateful for the wonderful summer we have had!

The weather has been great (maybe too good, as the crops haven’t done so well in the heat and so food prices have gone up.)

We continue to shop wisely after planning our meals for the week and only get the ingredients we need.

Last week, we got some corn on the cob. potatoes, spinach, leeks, and calaloo from some friends. These are things they planted on their allotment and we were happy to take some and give them some of our tomatoes. All of these featured in our meal planning this week. Some have been prepared and frozen for later use.

Here are some of our meals for this week

You can use hardy food from the allotment in your meal planning. The fruits and vegetables are freshest and most nutritious when just harvested. See how we did this week.

  • Jacket potatoes with bolognese sauce and cheese
  • Steamed calaloo with green bananas
  • Jamaican chicken and vegetable soup with corn on the cob
  • Spaghetti bolognese
  • chicken and vegetable stir-fry with noodles
  • Vegetable soup with homemade bread

This week I managed also to make a batch of tomato sauce in the slow cooker. Then I poured them into plastic bottles and put them in the freezer where they can stay for months until we are ready to use them. This may be in winter when I don’t really want to leave the house and will be eating mostly from what we already have in.

The excess courgettes and spinach have also been prepared and frozen for making a lovely pepperpot soup for the dark days of winter.

As usual, this week we are linking up with Katy to share our meal plans in the hope that we will inspire each other and our readers about saving money on meal planning.

Sounds like a delicious (and cheap) week for you. You can’t beat homegrown produce can you! Thanks for linking up x

I had to go off and look up what calaloo was! Sounds nice – a bit like spinach? We have been eating home grown a lot too. So fresh and cheap!

Yep. I’d not heard of calaloo either but it sounds like a great tasty way to eat more green stuff. You’ve done well to grow your own food this year in the heat. My garden has given us loads of tomatoes and blackberries as well as six runner beans! But I’m making the most of them all and I’ll plan to grow a few more things next year!

Nothing better than a warm bowl of veg soup in the winter. Especially with some homemade bread
