Our word of the week is light

This post may contain affiliate links

Light is such a lovely word and I guess I am happy that it is the perfect word that I could find to sum up how my week has gone. My reflections showed me that finally, as we say, there is LIGHT at the end of the tunnel. If you’ve read any of our Word of the Week posts recently you would have seen that we are snowed under with redecorating and DIY projects. This is not to say that we have put everything else aside. Quite the opposite; we have had to keep up with all our regular work too.

You would have read that we had to make some serious decisions and I am so glad that we did. Sometimes you just have to be brave and take the proverbial bull by the horns. So I guess this post is a quick update on our progress.

The summary of the background story is that we watched so many YouTube videos of room makeovers so much that we convinced ourselves that we could do it too! So, we tackled the smallest bedroom and we were quite pleased with ourselves. We had a broken bedframe in the process which we had to repair ourselves and it is holding up well. The renovation also included some painting of walls and furniture and then styling with new bedsheets, cushions, etc.

We should have stopped there when we were ahead. Anyway, we then decided to take on two more bedrooms which meant totally getting everything out, removing wallpaper, putting down new flooring, curtains, sheets, etc. Believe me when I tell you that it was hard work! YouTubers generally don’t show you all the hard bits and disappointments and hiccups etc. They seem to be always smiling and on target and work like superhumans, lol.

For us, it was rather difficult, physical work that was also messy and time-consuming. Our biggest problem was getting reliable tradesmen in to do the jobs that we couldn’t do, such as taking down a massive wardrobe and putting it back up! They make so many promises and then don’t fulfill them! One man even left a ladder and some tools in one of the rooms and promised to come back the next day to finish up the job he had started. Well, it is exactly 2 weeks ago and he hasn’t returned or even called to say what has happened. We haven’t called him back either. Thankfully we had bought a little sander and a nail gun to get some of the jobs done. They were not the expensive ones but they worked perfectly for us. It was our first time using these ‘power tools’ and hopefully, not the last. The sander was just over £20 and the nailer, just over £30. We want to keep using them. But not soon!

The good news is that things are looking light and airy in one room where everything is done. Not perfect, but done. And that is ok. The next room is currently being given the last few touches and I am almost sure it will be ready today too.

This is a sneak peek of the first room which was only completed yesterday. Hopefully, you can see the next room next week. The full video will be on our YouTube channel soon too.

Yesterday we felt the need to take a little light break from being stuck in the house for so long being consumed with all this work. Well, we needed to get some sealant and also some drain unblocker for the shower which seemed to be running slowly. We were happy to find the Elbow Grease brand of drain unblocker as it always works really well. It cuts through the hair and grease that tends to build up. We had a look in the shops (first in a long while) and were pleasantly surprised by all the Christmas stuff up already. Is it me, or is Christmas scheduled for earlier this year?

We managed to get some lights, duvet sets, and a few other little decor pieces for the two rooms. The fluffy and comfy duvet covers are from B and M. Lunch was also a welcome KFC which we hadn’t had in forever, so that was nice.

Our next project after this is to change the carpet on the stairs and landing. Don’t worry, we won’t be doing it ourselves but we will have to remove the old one. Wish us luck.

How about you? How would you sum up your week? We are linking with Ann each week to share this and you can too! We’d love to have you join us. If you don’t have a blog, why not start one today. It can be a nice little relaxing business for you!

A big thanks to Ann who is always so faithful in setting up this linky post for us each week, despite all the struggles she has sometimes. This is commitment.

Word of the Week linky

Light really is a wonderful word. It is full of hope. It sounds like you’s have done so well with your DIY projects. Even with calling in tradesmen you should be so proud of yourselves, jobs like you have been doing are not easy. The bedroom is looking great, good luck with the stair carpet. x
